What Causes Sciatica?
The sciatic nerve helps you feel and control your legs. This nerve begins in the spinal cord and runs through the hips, buttocks, and thighs.
Sciatica manifests as a feeling of numbness, weakness, or pain in the back, buttocks, or legs. This sensation comes from a sciatic nerve injury or compression.
You may feel a sensation in your feet or toes like pins and needles are pricking them. You may also experience a lack of control over your bowels or bladder.
Sciatica comes with old age and may affect more than 40 percent of the population at some point in their lives.
4 Causes of Sciatica
Spinal and sciatic nerve injuries and the following conditions can cause sciatica:
1. Spinal Stenosis
This is the unusual narrowing of the lower spinal canal. Spinal stenosis exerts pressure on the spinal cord and sciatic nerves.
2. Herniated Discs
Pieces of cartilage separate the spinal bones or vertebrae. A thick, clear material cushions the cartilage for flexibility. When the layer of cartilage rips, herniated discs occur.
Herniated discs compress the sciatic nerve, which causes lower limb numbness and pain.
This is a degenerative disk disorder wherein spinal bones extend forward to each other. Extended spinal bones can pinch and compress the sciatic nerve.
4. Piriformis Syndrome
The piriformis muscle joins the lower spine and the thighbones. Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle contracts, tightens, and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.
This neuromuscular disorder worsens when you experience a fall, sit for long periods, or experience an auto accident.
Non-spinal conditions such as diabetes, constipation, pregnancy, and childbirth can also cause sciatica.
